The \u201eGood Friday Agreement\u201c would never have been\u00a0signed if the negotiators had not gotten anything decent\u00a0to eat. The ingredients to many of these dishes often come from\u00a0local farmers who have their fields on either side of a today\u00a0invisible border which Brexit is likely to make a visible\u00a0one again. But no matter who catches the\u00a0fish, the only thing that matters is: \u201cThe fish is fresh.\u201d This\u00a0is what Gerard Sands thinks. He works as a cook in a small\u00a0restaurant in Belfast, almost exclusively frequented by\u00a0Catholics. Gerard Sands is the son of former House MP and\u00a0IRA fighter Bobby Sands, who died in prison in 1981 as a\u00a0result of a hunger strike.\u00a0The \u201eGood Friday Agreement\u201c has largely ended the\u00a0violent clashes on both sides. But the social divisions that\u00a0have grown over generations are still there. One can tell\u00a0immediately when one visit pubs on either sides of the\u00a0Belfast \u201epeace walls\u201c. Even though the \u201epeace walls\u201c are open\u00a0for passage today, it is almost regarded as a betrayal to go to\u00a0a pub on the other side. The cooking activists of the social\u00a0enterprise \u201eUrban Community Chef\u201c want to do something\u00a0about this. Their motto is: \u201e… cooking up a difference\u201c. With\u00a0their social cooking events they want to strengthen the\u00a0dialogue between both sides in everyday life.<\/p>\n
